Welcome back and happy Monday!
After receiving new seats we got down to business on some SpringBoard lessons. We quickly reviewed the homework (page 63 and 80-81) then you completed a quickwrite about the prompt from #5 on page 64. Then, we reviewed the Elements of Argument on page 68, read the Student Example and identified each of the Elements in the piece.

HW: Your homework is to revise your quickwrite so that it includes each of the Elements of Argument. (Bottom of page 68.)

10/31/11

Today we re-capped MLA format. Don't forget that the final draft of Embedded Assessment #1 is due tomorrow. You also need to bring your rough draft and interview notes to hand in.

Today, you began reading and annotating "When Good People Do Evil." You should highlight and make a note of as many connections as you can find between this article and LOTF. We will discuss this tomorrow.

HW: On Wednesday, we will be taking a test over LOTF. Bring your NOTES with you.

Friday

10/28/11

Today we went over a few requirements for completing the final draft of Embedded Assessment #1.
Final drafts are due Tuesday, November 1st. They must be typed, double-spaced and in MLA format. Here is the way MLA format should look.

Next week on Wednesday we will be taking a test over Lord of the Flies. We'll discuss the specifics of the test on Monday.

Tuesday

10/25/11

Today we talked about a few last items from Chapter 10 of LOTF, then reviewed the requirements and scoring guide for Embedded Assessment #1. Please see pages 60-62 in your SpringBoard book for the specifics on this.
HW: For tomorrow, you need to read Chapter 11 in LOTF and you need to bring the notes from your completed interview.

Monday

10/24/11

Today, while you were taking a quiz over LOTF chapter 10, I checked off that you completed pages 58 and 59 in your SpringBoard books, then we had a few minutes to talk about Ralph and Piggy and how messed up these boys have really become.

As you begin Embedded Assessment #1, remember this timeline: Your interview must be completed by Wednesday. The rough draft of your Interview Narrative must be completed by Friday. We'll be talking about the specifics of these things tomorrow.

Also, if you have NOT finished your Narrative Writing Work Sample (from two weeks ago), you must come in and get it finished up by FRIDAY. After Friday all samples will be scored as final drafts.

Thursday

10/17/11

Sorry I wasn't with you today. Alas, I was home sick. But I know that Ms. Wooley held down the fort and you discussed the SpringBoard homework and dug in to LOTF Ch. 7 a bit.

Hopefully, I'll be back tomorrow and we'll pick up from there.

Monday

10/10/11

Happy Monday!

Today you handed in your playlist homework, then we began working on a Narrative Work Sample. We'll be spending the rest of this week completing the work sample-- like the rest of the English classes in the building. So, come ready to write and edit and amaze with your abilities!

Thursday

10/6/11

After a few minutes to prepare yourselves while I handed back some papers, you took a LOTF Chapter 6 quiz. We talked briefly about grades, too. Then we began discussing some more LOTF.

No homework tonight! If you have gotten behind, use this time to catch up.

Wednesday

10/5/11

Today we reviewed the "Coming of Age" theme that you were asked to think and write about in SpringBoard Activity 1.10. We discussed (from your homework) how "First Love" is a coming of age story, and also how "Always Running," the "Cut" selections and LOTF are coming of age stories as well. We compared and contrasted the ideas and "lessons" that these stories have presented.

At the end of the period I collected the "mock interviews" you created for the narrator of First Love (1.10, #3) and for a character in LOTF (1.10, #4)-- these were assigned and begun in class on Monday.

HW: For tomorrow, read Chapter 6 in LOTF and continue working on your double entry notes.

Tuesday

10/3 and 10/4

Monday: Today you turned in your masks and worked on 1.10 in the Spring Board book.
HW: For tomorrow you need to be through Chapter 5 in LOTF with notes.

Tuesday: We discussed some important issues and passages from LOTF Chapters 4 & 5.
HW: Finish up 1.10, including all the parts of page 41. For #4, you'll use LOTF as the "independent novel" you've been reading.

Friday

9/30/11

Today we reviewed your observations about Jack, Simon and the jungle from chapter 2 in LOTF. (See two days ago.) Then, we talked about some of the changes we're noticing in chapter 4 and I gave you the mask assignment to work on.

HW: Complete page 39 in your SpringBoard book and make your mask for Monday. By Tuesday, you should read Chapter 5 and keep working on your notes!

Wednesday

9/26 - 9/28/11

Monday: Collected your LOTF paragraphs about Chapter 1 and checked that you had some Chapter 2 notes. Class time to work on SpringBoard activity 1.8 "Cut."
HW: Read through Chapter 3 in LOTF by Wednesday and continue taking double-entry journal notes.

Tuesday: Discussed Chapter 2 in LOTF.
HW: Through Chapter 3 by tomorrow.

Wednesday: Began with 10 minute LOTF Chapter 3 reading quiz. Then, we completed a close reading (fire at the end of Chapter 2) together.
HW: Closely re-read pages 48-49 and take notes on Jack and the environment. Then, closely re-read and take notes on pages 56-57 and take notes on Simon and the environment. Notice the contrast.
Also, you should begin reading Chapter 4 in LOTF. You need to be through this chapter, with notes on it, by Friday.

Friday

9/23/11

Today you turned in the final and rough drafts of the analysis paragraph we've been working on.
Then, we spent some time going over the idea of double-entry notes and discussing some more about Chapter 1 of LOTF.

HW: For Monday, read Chapter 2 in LOTF. Also, write a paragraph that addresses the following prompt--

In LOTF, how does Golding use diction, syntax or imagery to develop our understanding of one of the characters or situations introduced in Chapter 1.

Thursday

9/22/11

Today we worked on the writing prompt on page 18. We talked about sentence frames for a clear and focused topic sentence, then we talked about putting some "P.E.E." in every paragraph. The last few minutes of  class we talked about the first chapter of LOTF.

HW: For tomorrow, bring a final draft of your paragraph to turn in along with the rough draft we worked on in class.

Wednesday

9/21/11

Today we finished working our way through 1.7 in the Springboard book-- specifically we read and talked about Oranges and Spotlight, and imagery and tone.

HW: For tomorrow you need to read Chapter 1 in Lord of the Flies, and you need to draft a paragraph (or two) in response to the writing prompt on page 18. Use your graphic organizer to help you find specific details and examples for your paragraph.

Tuesday

9/20/11

So, after my absence yesterday, I was back today ready to do this all over again!
Here's the recap, in case you missed it:

Monday-- went to get Lord Of The Flies books, previewed the novel, added some terms to your vocabulary lists, and began working on "Eleven."

Tuesday-- Continued with a guided close reading of "Eleven." We'll work in "Oranges" tomorrow.

HW: By Thursday you need to read Chapter 1 in LOTF. You should be taking notes in a double-entry style journal over this chapter. If you need a reminder of what this looks like see page 17 in the Springboard book. This is a long-ish chapter, so you might get started on it tonight so that you can be sure it gets finished on time.

Friday

9/15 and 9/16/11

On Thursday we finished up with the partner introductions. Great job, everyone!

On Friday, we began our Academic Vocabulary Notebooks by adding the first ten terms and their definitions. We will continue to add to these lists as the year progresses so, don't lose them! Then, in the last few minutes of class I had you write a bit of a reflection about your first few weeks of high school.

No homework for this weekend! (You're welcome. I'm sure all of you from 5th period are applauding right now.)

Wednesday

9/14/11

Today you had a few minutes to meet up with your partner and prepare yourselves. Then, we began presenting your classmate introductions. We'll finish these up tomorrow, so come prepared.

Tuesday

9/13/11

Today we practiced creating open-ended questions, then paired up to begin working on the classmate interview and introduction presented in Activity 1.4.

HW: Come to class tomorrow with the introduction of your classmate written out and ready to present. Use the suggestions on page 15 to help you as needed.

Monday

9/12/11

Today we began with a quick write about your name, then we reviewed the homework from this weekend and continued our discussion about diction, syntax, imagery and their affect on tone and voice.

HW: For tomorrow, you need to turn your quick write in to a more polished piece of writing (organized, edited, added to, etc.). You will be sharing this with someone in class tomorrow, so make sure you turn it into a piece you're comfortable showing to another classmate.

Sunday

9/9/11

Today in class we reviewed the homework (1.2) and began working on Activity 1.3 about diction, syntax, imagery and how those elements create tone and voice.

HW: You should complete all of Activity 1.3 (through page 12) for Monday. Come ready to discuss your completed graphic organizers.

Thursday

9/8/11

Today I distributed SpringBoard books and we previewed the text and began looking at Activities 1.1 and 1.2. For tomorrow, you should be through page 6 and ready to discuss your ideas.

Wednesday

Hello, freshmen!
I'm glad you made it back for your first full day of high school. I trust that my class was your very favorite! :)  Today I gave you assigned seats, had you fill out a little "get to know you" index card, and then we talked briefly about the syllabus. In case you already misplaced your syllabus, or your parents might like to print their own copy, you can find it in the list of links on the side of the blog.

Tomorrow, I'll distribute SpringBoard books and we'll dig in to some actual English curriculum. See you then!

Friday

Also, if you thought I was a little crazy talking about all that "Sounds of Poetry" stuff, check out this article by a famous poet writing about how he understands the sounds of poetry by relating to music. See, I'm not the only one who notices and analyzes these things.

We took our weekly vocab quiz and then had some time to chat about the AP test and just take it easy. We'll start up with some serious English again next week now that AP testing (for most of you) is over. Have a great weekend!

AP Lit Test Review Materials!

Do you need to do a little last minute reviewing for the test on Thursday?
Here are some interesting, and possible helpful, resources to check out:

General Test Practice and Review:
Some links to College Board (and other) resources-- http://ap.testfrenzy.com/englishlit.html
Another AP Lit teacher's website with many helpful files-- http://classroom.quixoticpedagogue.org/ap-english-iv/lit-test-prep

Glossary of Literary Terms:
This covers the basics nicely for a quick review, without being too overwhelming.
http://www.uncp.edu/home/canada/work/allam/general/glossary.htm

Multiple Choice:
Here is a quick 20 question multiple choice practice test, offered by Shmoop.com: http://www.shmoop.com/ap-english-literature/practice-quiz.html

This is a College Board article on Multiple Choice Strategies . (Please note that this article does not reflect the fact that  the College Board changed scoring procedures this year. As of this year you no longer lose 1/4 point for incorrect answers. This means that guessing can only help and not hurt your score.)

Essay Questions:
Essay #3 on the test asks you to write about a novel, play or epic that you have studied. Reviewing some of the novels and plays we've read will help you be prepared to support your ideas with specific details. I think the Shmoop guides are the best and most student-friendly, so here are some links for your perusal:

Did you say EXTRA CREDIT?

Why yes, I did. For some extra credit points you can participate in Poem In Your Pocket Day. Go here to read about the history of this observance.

The rules to earn the credit for my class:
1. Find and copy a poem that you like. (It might be one you've loved since you were a kid. It might be a new one you just found. It might be some of your favorite lines from a longer poem. It doesn't matter, as long as it is meaningful to you.)
2. On April 14th, 2011 carry this poem in your pocket with you.
3. Throughout the day share your poem with at least 5 people, including me, of course. (Please note, this cannot be 5 people at one time. It must be 5 separate showings to at least 5 different people.)
4. At the end of the day on the 14th, post in the comments below: a) the title and author of the poem you chose and a link to the poem itself if you can find one, b) the reason you chose that particular poem, c) a list of who you shared it with, and d) a comment on the reactions you received upon sharing your poem with others.

That's it. Couldn't be easier-- except you must do all of this on the 14th. (Not the 13th, not the 15th. It has to be done on the actual day to get the credit.)

4/11/11

Freshmen:

Tomorrow we will take the first part of the Romeo and Juliet test. It will include some true/false, multiple choice and quote identification questions. Review all your notes, quizzes and handouts. You MAY NOT use notes on this portion of the test.

On Monday you'll write an in-class essay about this topic:
Considering the importance and purpose of Act 3, scene 1 to the development of the plot and characters of Hamlet, which stage or film adaptation that we watched is the most effective? Why? Discuss specific performance details and how the strongest performances demonstrate the important elements of this scene within the context of the play.

Some Hamlet resources you might find helpful:
Remember that your essay is not just about your opinion. It is about which interpretation/performance best supports your understanding of the scene's action and characters in context of the whole play. If you're looking for resources to help with your overall understanding of the whole play, I really recommend visiting Shmoop.

Or, one person's simplified "modern language" interpretation of the whole play can be found here.

Or, just for fun, and a refresher on the letter B, try this.

An interesting article I read today...

NY Times: Book Lovers Fear Dim Future for Notes in the Margins

Follow the link, read the article, leave a comment here about it, and there's a mighty good chance there will be a little extra credit in it for you.

Oh yeah, check back for other random, unannounced extra credit opportunities this semester, too. You never know what you might find...
