AP Lit:
Vocab quiz, then we looked at a few poems and talked about tone. I collected the paragraph you wrote about the love poem.
Speaking of "Barbie Doll," look at what I saw right after school-- http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/barbie-s-39-bust-18-waist-stir-body-image-debate/6rce8tt?q=Eating+disorder&rel=msn&from=en-us_msnhp&form=msnrll&gt1=42010

HW: For those of you who realize "Senior Skip Day" is stupid, for Monday read pages 431-440 in the text. Also, read the poems "A Certain Lady," "We Real Cool", and "To His Coy Mistress." Jot down some notes on what we know about the speakers of these 3 poems.

Tuesday

4/19/11

Freshmen:
Shared some stories, then handed them in. Began reading Ch. 1 of LOTF together.

AP Lit:
A few final thoughts on Hamlet: Did he get exactly what he wanted? Did he, and all the others, get just what they deserved? Isn't it right that Fortinbras and Horatio would be the only ones left standing?
Turned in Hamlet Study Guides and 3 questions.
Watched the Simpsons version of Hamlet.(No one out crazies Ophelia!)
HW: Read pages 398-415 in your text. Take notes on main ideas and your thoughts/responses to the poems.

Monday

4/18/11

Freshmen:
New vocab. Then, we reviewed what went down last week while I was gone, went and got copies of Lord of the Flies (as needed) and began a little creative writing assignment: This class crash lands on a deserted island and is stranded. Tell the story of what might transpire.
HW: Spend 10 minutes working on your imaginative story. (If you're really inspired you can certainly spend more time writing.) See what turns up as you explore the possibilities. I'll collect these tomorrow.

AP Lit:
Vocab! Then we did a lot of recapping what happened last week while I was gone-- a light saber battle? an unintended Stephen Hawking impression? a reading part set-up just to mess with Brett? This was a very informative day.
HW: Be ready to turn in answers to the 3 Hamlet questions that were given to you on Thursday. Also, I will collect your Hamlet study guides tomorrow.

Tuesday

4/12/11

Freshmen:
Began watching the modern Romeo + Juliet movie. It's something else, isn't it?

AP Lit:
Discussed Claudius and why I love to hate him.
HW: Read Hamlet 5.1 and start working on the study guide. (Seriously, how old is Hamlet? Am I doing the math right?)

Monday

Did you say EXTRA CREDIT?

Why yes, I did. For some extra credit points you can participate in Poem In Your Pocket Day. Go here to read about the history of this observance.

The rules to earn the credit for my class:
1. Find and copy a poem that you like. (It might be one you've loved since you were a kid. It might be a new one you just found. It might be some of your favorite lines from a longer poem. It doesn't matter, as long as it is meaningful to you.)
2. On April 14th, 2011 carry this poem in your pocket with you.
3. Throughout the day share your poem with at least 5 people, including me, of course. (Please note, this cannot be 5 people at one time. It must be 5 separate showings to at least 5 different people.)
4. At the end of the day on the 14th, post in the comments below: a) the title and author of the poem you chose and a link to the poem itself if you can find one, b) the reason you chose that particular poem, c) a list of who you shared it with, and d) a comment on the reactions you received upon sharing your poem with others.

That's it. Couldn't be easier-- except you must do all of this on the 14th. (Not the 13th, not the 15th. It has to be done on the actual day to get the credit.)

4/11/11

Freshmen:
New vocab and then finished watching the R & J movie...without glitches for 7th period. (I'm not sure why my DVD player dislikes 2nd period so much.)

AP Lit:
New vocab, a few soliloquies and then a few minutes to talk about Hamlet.
HW: Be ready to soliloquize on Friday.

Thursday

4/7/2011

Freshmen:
Part two of the Romeo and Juliet test.
HW: Nope.

AP Lit:
Talked about Horatio, Ophelia, foils, etc.

Tuesday

4/5/11

Freshmen:
We finished the very end of R & J. (So sad!) But then we made up a much happier ending!
